I stood on the frozen shoreline as wind-driven snow erased the horizon, turning sky and lake into one endless sheet of white. In front of me sat an Arrow class ice boat, its sleek hull buried beneath fresh powder, mast standing like a lonely marker in the storm.

Normally, these boats are built for speed, capable of racing across glassy ice at highway velocities. The optimum conditions for ice boating are clear skies, solid black ice, and steady winds between 10 and 25 knots. Smooth, snow-free ice allows the runners to grip properly, while consistent wind fills the sail without dangerous gusts. Today, however, the lake was locked in chaos. Heavy snowfall and near-zero visibility made sailing impossible, and drifts clogged the runners that should have been skimming the surface.

I felt a strange respect for the stillness. The Arrow class, designed for motion and adrenaline, was forced into silence. The storm demanded patience, reminding me that even machines built for speed must sometimes surrender. In this frozen moment, the boat became a symbol of waiting—of trusting that calmer skies and perfect ice will eventually return.

My name is Alec Halstead. I’m a local Hudson Valley photographer and a veteran. Over the years, I’ve exhibited my work in galleries, been published in newspapers and magazines, and sold prints. A portion of every sale goes to veterans' organizations—my way of giving back to those who’ve walked a similar path. Photography has not only given me a new purpose but also a way to share the beauty of the world while supporting those who have served. .
