1991 Harley-Davidson Softail, custom EVO motorcycle, Softail build, and American V-twin craftsmanship tell the story of a bike built from the ground up.
This 1991 Harley-Davidson Softail started life as little more than a basket case—a pile of parts and a vision of what it could become. Instead of walking away from the project, I decided to build the motorcycle myself. It took nearly a year of searching, collecting, and gathering the right parts before everything finally came together. What emerged was the custom Softail pictured here: a machine built not from a catalog, but from patience, persistence, and a lot of wrenching.
At the heart of the bike is Harley-Davidson's legendary Evolution, or EVO, V-twin. Introduced in 1984, the 1340cc Evolution engine became famous for its improved aluminum heads and cylinders, better oiling, greater reliability, and strong low-end torque compared with earlier Shovelhead engines. The EVO helped usher Harley-Davidson into a new era and earned a reputation for being one of the company's most durable and dependable big-twin engines.
The Softail design added another important piece of Harley history. Its hidden rear suspension was engineered to give the motorcycle the clean, hardtail appearance riders loved while providing the comfort of modern suspension. That combination of traditional styling and improved ride helped make the Softail one of Harley-Davidson's most successful platforms.
But this motorcycle means more to me than its specifications. I watched it go from boxes of parts to a finished machine that I could finally fire up and ride. Every component represents part of a year-long search and a hands-on labor of love. This wasn't simply a motorcycle I bought—it was a motorcycle I built.
