My name is Alec Halstead, and I’ve spent most of my life navigating the world through the lens of a camera. I’m a 23-year military veteran, and ninety-five percent of my career was everything they promise in the recruiting office: structure, camaraderie, and a sense of purpose. The other five percent was the unimaginable—places steeped in conflict and hardship, the kind of scenes that cling to your soul long after you leave. Photography became my sanctuary, a way to process that five percent. It’s how I reclaimed beauty from chaos, capturing moments of light and shadow to create a quiet triumph over the darkness.

Over the years, I’ve exhibited my work in galleries, been published in newspapers and magazines, and sold prints. A portion of every sale goes to veterans’ organizations—my way of giving back to those who’ve walked a similar path.

One of my favorite subjects is Bannerman’s Castle. Growing up in Newburgh and Salt Point, New York, the castle was part of the landscape of my childhood. I remember the day it burned. I was with my grandparents, crossing the original single span of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. My grandmother gasped, “Earl, look! The castle is burning!” That memory has stayed with me, as vivid as the flames we saw that day.

Decades later, the castle has deteriorated, but it still holds its grandeur. One early morning, I launched my boat before dawn, the Hudson River as still as glass. There’s nothing like being alone on the water at that hour—the stillness and majesty of nature soak into your soul. I reached Bannerman’s Castle just as the first light painted the sky in shades of orange. I took several photos, but it wasn’t until recently that one shot truly came to life.

Yesterday, I revisited it in my editing software and converted it to black and white. The result stunned me—a timeless, haunting image of a castle that can never be captured the same way again. Decay has claimed more of its walls since that fire decades ago, but through the lens, its story endures.
