Growing up in the quiet embrace of Newburgh and Salt Point, memories etched in every corner, I reminisce about one of my first captures of Bannerman's Castle. The castle, a silent witness to my childhood, stood proud before the flames devoured its grandeur. I recall a moment etched in time, a drive across the original single-span Newburgh Beacon Bridge with my grandparents. "Earl, look, the castle is burning," my grandmother exclaimed, marking the tragic spectacle that haunted my memory.

Years later, fresh out of the navy, I found myself on a motorcycle journey home. My confidence in photography, shattered during my naval service, lingered like a shadow. Home for a brief visit before a new job, I hadn't dared touch my camera despite past publications. Riding on 218 from West Point, I succumbed to the temptation of speed, my focus on the road rather than the surroundings.

Then, a moment of reckoning. Coming around the overlook on 218, the world halted. The clouds painted the sky with an otherworldly brush. Bannerman's Castle, an emblem of resilience, stood against the canvas of river and sky. The air, crisp and clear, carried the scent of the river, an olfactory symphony that transcended time.

In that suspended moment of clarity, my camera became an extension of my reawakening passion. A shot captured in the analog era, circa 1990, well before the digital revolution and the castle's eventual collapse. This photograph became a testament to my resurgence, a phoenix rising from the ashes of doubt.

The image, frozen in time, held the essence of that extraordinary scene—a scene that reignited my love for photography. From that day forth, the lens became my confidant, and every click resonated with the echoes of self-discovery. In the heart of Newburgh's memories, where the river whispered and the castle once stood, I found not just an image but a personal renaissance.
