In the serene landscape of the Hudson Valley, nestled just south of Garrison, New York, lies a place of mesmerizing beauty and mystery—Castle Rock State Park. Perched atop one of the hills in the Hudson Highlands, this ancient castle stands as a sentinel, overlooking the majestic river, like a guardian from a bygone era.

Constructed in 1881 by the affluent railroad magnate, William Henry Osborn, the castle boasts rough-hewn stone walls that whisper tales of a rich history. With its grandeur and historical significance, it became part of the Highlands State Park when New York State acquired a portion of the property in the 1970s. However, Castle Rock itself remained under private ownership, preventing entry into its hallowed halls. Though hiking trails wind around the castle's grounds, the enigmatic interior remains veiled from the curious wanderer's gaze.

The sight of Castle Rock had always ignited a spark of fascination in my heart— Being a passionate photographer I longed to capture the castle's essence through the lens of a camera. Countless times, I had driven by, eyes fixed upon the castle's silhouette, yearning to seize its beauty in a photograph.

On a day destined for adventure, I set out, intending to immortalize Castle Rock bathed in the morning's gentle light. The day, initially promising, took a downturn when fate seemed determined to test the resolve of this determined soul.

With camera gear packed and excitement brewing, the day's journey began with a mechanical hiccup—my truck refusing to yield, displaying a distressing absence of oil pressure. Investigation revealed a leaking puddle of oil, traced back to a barely clinging drain plug, a result of a recent oil change. A call to the guilty fast lube and a tow from a helpful friend set things right, but time slipped away.

Setting forth once more, my optimism waned when traffic stalled atop the Newburgh Beacon Bridge. Unwilling to succumb to setbacks, an alternate route was chosen, guiding this weary traveler down the winding roads of 218, where Storm King Mountain's curves concealed an unexpected challenge—a slowly deflating tire.

Forced to halt, I surveyed the situation, discovering a tire succumbing to the unfortunate fate of a puncture. With resilience as my constant companion, I changed the tire and persevered toward my elusive goal.

Finally arriving at a vantage point offering a captivating view of Castle Rock, the day's tribulations faded into insignificance against the backdrop of the castle's stunning beauty. The sky, adorned in a breathtaking array of colors, illuminated the ancient stones, casting a spellbinding aura upon the landscape.

Camera poised and spirit undeterred,I captured the shot I had yearned for—an image embodying the castle's timeless allure, a testament to determination triumphing over adversity. Returning home weary but fulfilled, I stood as a testament to a day of relentless challenges overcome and a dream fulfilled—a perfect image, forged in defiance of Murphy's Law that had conspired against me throughout the day.
