My name is Alec Halstead, and my life has been shaped by both the lens of my camera and the perspective of a seasoned military veteran. My passion for photography has led me to capture moments of both joy and sorrow, each frame telling a story of resilience and sacrifice. I have a special fondness for Bannerman's Castle, a place I often photograph. I remember the castle before it burned. I was with my grandparents crossing the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge when my grandmother looked out the window and said, "Earl, look, the castle is burning." That was back when the bridge was just the original single span.

One fall day, I took a shot from my boat after the last major collapse of some of the castle walls, before the remaining walls were braced and the grounds began to be cleaned up. It was a beautiful day on the boat; the river had been calm all day. The air was fresh with no humidity, and I had a great lunch with me. The tranquility of the moment was juxtaposed with the haunting ruins of the castle.

It's a shame more effort wasn't made to save the castle until decades after the fire. Each time I photograph Bannerman's, I'm reminded of that day with my grandparents and the missed opportunities to preserve such a historic site. My photography seeks to capture not just the beauty of these moments, but also the layers of history and emotion they represent. Through my lens, Bannerman's Castle stands as a testament to the passage of time and the enduring spirit of those who cherish its memory.
