My name is Alec Halstead, and my life has been a series of battles, from the front lines of war to the daily skirmishes of civilian life. But through it all, my camera has been my steadfast companion, a source of solace amidst the chaos.

One of the many icons along the river is the former Mt. St. Alphonsus Seminary. It is a castle overlooking the Hudson in West Park, NY. Directly across the river is another icon, the Mills Norrie Mansion State Park and Marina. My wife and I have kept our boat at Norrie for years. During boating season, we are down there or out on the boat more than we are at home.

A couple of weeks ago, we stayed over on the boat one night. I woke at the crack of dawn, like I usually do, and put the coffee on. It was quiet and peaceful, and my mind was at ease. As I was paying attention to the coffee maker, light from the rising sun filled the cabin with an unreal glow. I went up on deck; the air was so still and mild. There was a blue heron on the shore and a couple of crows starting to fly around. I turned and looked, and Mt. St. Alphonsus was bathed in light from the rising sun. The sky behind the monastery was beautiful. I went down below, retrieved my camera, and took a couple of shots. Then I grabbed my coffee, sat back, and relaxed, taking it all in.

When I got home and edited the pictures, one shot stood out. It captured the grandeur of the sunrise and the monastery perfectly. The light pastel colors of the sky reflecting on the calm waters of the Hudson added a timeless quality, a reminder of the enduring beauty in life despite its battles.

In that moment, I felt a profound sense of peace. The struggles of war, the pressures of civilian life, and the constant battle to find balance all faded away. The sunrise was a reminder that even in the most chaotic times, there is beauty to be found. It's a lesson my camera has taught me time and again: to focus on the moments of serenity amidst the turmoil. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
