Back in 2013, I was transporting a boat up the Hudson, cutting through the night like a lone traveler on a deserted highway. It was one of those rare, perfect nights. No wind, no ripples—just an expanse of glass reflecting the lights of the world above. The air was so crisp and clear that even the hum of late-night traffic in Manhattan had a musical quality to it, a symphony of the sleepless city.

As I glided past the skyline, I looked over at New York’s two most famous skyscrapers standing tall against the night. Their silhouettes glowed ghostly, their spires reaching towards the heavens, as if in conversation with the twinkling stars above. It was a sight that stopped me in my tracks. I grabbed my camera and took a shot, knowing in my gut that I was capturing something special.

Recently, while combing through my archives, I found that image again. Time had tucked it away, waiting for me to rediscover it. Looking at it now, I realize just how unique it is—a moment frozen in time, impossible to recreate. In the years since that night, New York’s skyline has changed dramatically. Two new towers, Summit 1 Vanderbilt and the JP Morgan Chase building, now loom over the city, altering its profile forever.

It’s a strange feeling, knowing that an image I once took without a second thought has become a piece of history. Those old icons of the skyline had class, a style that spoke of an era long before glass and steel became a race to the heavens. The shot I captured that night stands as a testament to what once was, a reminder that time spares nothing—not even the giants of the city.

Photography has always been about preserving moments before they slip away. And in that quiet night on the Hudson, I unknowingly captured a farewell to a cityscape that will never exist again.
