My life has revolved around photography for as long as I can remember. Over the years, I've taken numerous courses, always striving to refine my craft. I'm a perpetual learner, eager to explore new techniques and master the art of capturing moments. My work has graced the pages of several magazines and newspapers, and I've had the privilege of seeing my photographs exhibited in galleries across the globe. About a year and a half ago, I decided to further expand my knowledge by enrolling in two different online photography classes. These classes weren't just about theory; they offered workshops that promised to be extraordinary. Last weekend, my anticipation reached its peak as I headed to New York City for a workshop I had signed up for a year in advance.

The workshop brought together like-minded individuals, all eager to learn, and I had the chance to meet both the instructors and my fellow students. The camaraderie was palpable, and the energy was infectious. We embarked on photo shoots at breathtaking locations around the city. It was an incredible experience, and my passion for photography was reignited.

However, when I returned to my hotel room after a day of shooting, my enthusiasm was met with a sobering reality. I had made a rookie mistake – I had forgotten to pack the power cord for my laptop, leaving me with only my tablet for editing. The bigger blow came when I began reviewing my pictures. The majority of them were slightly out of focus, a fact that left me bewildered and mortified. I meticulously checked my camera settings and inspected all the lenses I had used during the workshop, only to find that everything seemed in order. Here I was, a published photographer, surrounded by top-notch professionals, and my work resembled that of an amateur.

Disheartened, I confided in one of the other students about my predicament. He asked, "Alec, what lens are you using?" As soon as I revealed my choice, I knew what he was going to say. In my fervor to capture the perfect shot, I had overlooked a basic but crucial detail. Correcting my mistake, I managed to capture some impressive shots during our final shoot of the weekend. Still, my self-doubt lingered, and I felt like an imposter among those seasoned photographers.

But when I returned home and had the chance to review the pictures on my desktop computer, my perspective shifted once more. Among a series of three nearly identical shots of Downtown Manhattan, I initially believed all were blurred. However, upon closer inspection, I discovered a hidden gem. Two of the shots were indeed blurred, but the third held an unexpected surprise – a green heron had landed during the long time exposure, creating a unique and stunning effect. It was a detail I would wager none of the other photographers had captured.

This discovery, along with a newfound appreciation for some of my other photos, finally released me from the grip of self-criticism. Photography is about seizing moments, revealing hidden details, and capturing the extraordinary in the ordinary. The workshop might have commenced with disappointment, but it concluded with a valuable lesson that reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place – the thrill of revealing the unseen and sharing it with the world. .
