The Bear Mountain Bridge, with its timeless beauty, has always fascinated me. I’ve photographed it more times than I can count, each image trying to capture a piece of its soul. But there was one shot that truly stood out—one I nearly missed.

Not long ago, I was out on the Hudson with some friends during one of our regular boat runs. That day, we cruised downriver to Croton Point—a popular summer hangout spot, buzzing with boats and people soaking up the sun. The weather was near perfect: mid-80s, just a light breeze. But as the afternoon wore on, the sky began to shift. Clouds thickened, and rain felt inevitable. We made the call to head back upriver before things got ugly—storms on the Hudson are no joke, especially in our little 16-foot runabout.

The rain caught us just past Peekskill. It wasn’t too rough yet, so we pressed on. As we came under the Bear Mountain Bridge—a structure with a legacy all its own, built in 1924 as the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time—I thought about how many stories it must’ve seen. We were about halfway to Garrison when one of my buddies shouted, “Yo Alec, there’s a picture you want to take!”

I turned and instantly hit the throttle to idle. Arcing over the bridge was this unreal, vibrant rainbow—like it had been painted just for that moment. I grabbed my camera and fired off a few shots before we had to keep moving ahead of the storm.

Later that night, looking through my shots, that image jumped out. It reminded me why I always carry my camera—because sometimes, nature decides to frame a moment better than any photographer ever could.
