June of 2014 was the beginning of a journey that turned my misfortune into an unexpected adventure. It all started when I decided to take our old family boat, a classic 1961 Skee Craft Mahogany beauty, on a trip up the Hudson River through the Champlain Canal.
The early days of the journey were filled with excitement as we navigated the waters, passing under bridges and soaking in the scenic views. However, as we reached the bridges at Ravena, a nagging feeling of something being off crept over me. Trusting my instincts, we turned the boat around and headed back.
After a quick refuel stop in Hudson, we resumed our trip, only to face another setback just past the cement plant in Cementon. The motor suddenly lost power and quit. I anxiously pulled off the cowlings to investigate, and my fears were confirmed – a broken crankshaft, an unexpected and unwelcome hitch in our journey. To add to the frustration, an Ulster County Sheriff boat passed us without a second glance, despite our attempts to flag them down.
Thankfully, a kind stranger came to our rescue, towing us to a friend's house in Saugerties. It was there that I received a brilliant and unexpected idea. I had been documenting the entire trip through photographs, capturing the essence of the towns along the Hudson. On a whim, I decided to share these moments with the editor of Hudson Valley Magazine.
A month later, the unexpected happened. The editor contacted me with an intriguing proposal – to take my boat and photograph the towns along the Hudson for an article in the April 2015 issue of Hudson Valley Magazine. My immediate response was a resounding "Absolutely!"
Reality struck when I remembered my boat was still in disrepair. Not to worry, as my cousin generously volunteered his boat for the endeavor. In September of 2014, I embarked on a remarkable journey from Highland NY to New York City, cruising back upriver to Albany, and then returning to Highland by boat, capturing the charm of the towns along the river through my lens.
It was an awe-inspiring experience, turning a potentially disastrous situation into an opportunity to combine two of my greatest loves – boating and photography. To top it all off, the icing on the cake came when seven of my pictures were published in the April 2015 print edition of Hudson Valley Magazine, with an additional ten featured in the online edition.
Among the unpublished shots was a particularly captivating image of the Saugerties Light, a silent testament to the unexpected turns that life can take – from broken crankshafts to the pages of a prestigious magazine. . Production and Shipping Time:
