My name is Alec Halstead. I'm a local Hudson Valley photographer and a veteran.

Over the years, I’ve exhibited my work in galleries, been published in newspapers and magazines, and sold prints. A portion of every sale goes to veterans’ organizations—my way of giving back to those who’ve walked a similar path.

One of my favorite subjects is Bannerman’s Castle. Growing up in Newburgh and Salt Point, New York, the castle was part of the landscape of my childhood. I remember the day it burned. I was with my grandparents, crossing the original single span of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. My grandmother gasped, “Earl, look! The castle is burning!” That memory has stayed with me, as vivid as the flames we saw that day.

Decades later, the castle has deteriorated, but it still holds its grandeur. One day, about a year before the last big collapse at the castle, I was out on my motorcycle, riding and relaxing. As usual, I had my camera with me—you never know what you will see. I had been out all afternoon, taking back roads, not really paying attention to where I was going. As the sun dipped lower in the sky, I found myself heading north on the Goat Trail out of Peekskill. It had been one of those glorious New York summer days—low humidity, perfect temperature.

I reached the lookout just before the Bear Mountain Bridge. The sky was starting to take on color, hinting at a spectacular sunset. Instead of crossing the bridge and testing my riding skills on Route 218, I chose to head up 9D. As I rode into Cold Spring, the sky ignited with color.

After the tunnel through Breakneck, I stopped a small parking area on the left. I pulled in, then made my way to the nearby footbridge over the tracks, which offers a stunning view of Bannerman’s. I climbed up, stood in awe, and watched the sun descend. The scene was breathtaking. I snapped several shots as the sky transformed, feeling humbled and blessed by the display.

That was years ago. But yesterday, I revisited those images in my editing software, applying new techniques and technology. The result stunned me—a timeless, haunting image of a castle that can never be captured the same way again. Time and decay have claimed more of its walls since that fire decades ago, but through the lens, its story endures.
