Joining the U.S.S. Antrim straight out of training marked the beginning of an unforgettable journey. Assigned the role of a 3rd class gas turbine technician, I found myself amidst the pre-commissioning crew in the vibrant city of Seattle. The anticipation and camaraderie among us created a sense of excitement that fueled our spirits.

Our first major milestone was reaching our home port of Mayport, Florida. However, the next challenge loomed large – the refresher training in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The intense six weeks of Reftra comprised non-stop drills and training, ensuring that both the crew and the ship were combat-ready. Every aspect of crew readiness, damage control, ship condition, and crew knowledge was scrutinized down to the smallest detail. Antrim emerged triumphant, passing all tests with flying colors.

Following the rigorous training, Antrim set sail for a port visit to Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Amid the picturesque landscapes and warm hospitality, unexpected challenges awaited. One fateful night, heavy surf rolled in, and the ship was relentlessly pounded against the pier. The force was so great that a large section of the hull caved in, bearing witness to the sheer power of the sea.

Whether it was in Jamaica, back at Guantanamo Bay, or during another port visit, the memories of Antrim lingered. The damage captured in a photograph served as a testament to the trials faced by the ship and its crew. Each dent and scrape told a story of resilience and the unwavering determination of those on board.

As I reflect on those moments, it's not just the challenges that stand out but the bonds forged during times of adversity. The journey aboard the U.S.S. Antrim was more than a naval assignment; it was a chapter in my life filled with camaraderie, trials, and the enduring spirit of those who served alongside me. These memories, etched in the scars on the ship's hull, serve as a reminder of the indomitable strength that comes from facing the unpredictable seas together.
