9/11/01 is a day that will be stuck in the American consciousness for generations to come. My memories of that day and the weeks that followed are burned in my memory like a movie playing over and over. I think most Americans know where they were and what they were doing that morning.

Here is a snapshot of what was. I took this picture in the fall of 1979. My father was on jury duty down in the city, so I asked my girlfriend if she would like to go down to the city. We rode down to the city on the train with Dad.

We walked around the city all day, taking in the sights. We went to the top of the World Trade Center and the Empire State Building, feeling like we were on top of the world. We went out to the Statue of Liberty and climbed up to the crown, the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces.

I had a little Kodak Instamatic with me, and I snapped this photo with it. At that moment, I never dreamed this photo would take on the meaning it has today.

On that fateful September morning in 2001, I was at work when the news of the terrorist attacks reached us. The Twin Towers, where we had stood so many years ago, were gone. The world as we knew it was forever changed.

That photograph, taken on a carefree day in 1979, now holds a bittersweet significance. It captures a time when the city's skyline was different, and the world felt safer. It reminds us of the innocent moments we once took for granted, a stark contrast to the tragedy that unfolded on 9/11.

The image is a link to the past, a symbol of a time when we could stand tall and unafraid, just like those towers in the photo. It's a reminder to cherish the simple joys, the moments of love, and the beauty of life because, in an instant, everything can change.
